the week you left

poem // a version of this piece was originally shared on Instagram on July 18, 2022, & later appeared in the self-published chapbook shadow / spark

the week you left
a summer storm
snuffed out the power

the afternoon half-light
painted every wall
gray

i listened to the sheets of rain
snap against the window
while my own
moldered
in the dryer

i lit candles
sat in silence
a bewitching
reverse vigil

hungry thunder
amplified
the emptiness
licking my insides

with every electric
crack in the clouds
i felt the
fissure
widen
