***UPDATE*** This quarter’s book club is now closed to new registration.
But keep your eyes on your inbox—a new book club may be on the horizon next spring! Stay informed:
You’re invited to join a virtual book club!
We will meet weekly to discuss Unfettered: Imagining a Childlike Faith Beyond the Baggage of Western Culture by author, pastor, and speaker Mandy Smith.
When: Wednesdays at 8:30pm EST/5:30 pm PST, September 8th – October 27th
What: Purchase includes 8 live conversations via Zoom and access to a private, moderated Facebook group. Book not included.
What are we reading?
From the back cover: “Unfettered will help you rediscover childlike habits, reimagine how to follow God with your whole self again, and join with God’s mission in the world.”
How much reading do I need to do?
Approximately 1 chapter per week. (There’s a foreword and introduction, plus 8 chapters, and we will be meeting for 8 weeks.)
How long will meetings last?
Meetings will last an hour.
I can’t make the live meetings—will the sessions be recorded?
Because our goal is to foster community in real-time, as well as have an informal conversation, sessions will not be recorded.
I really want to participate in this book club, but the dates/times just won’t work with my schedule. Are you open to different dates/times?
Yes! If I were to hear from enough people about dates and times that would work better, we could potentially start a second group. Here’s what to do:
1) Scroll all the way to the bottom to the contact form
2) tell me the chosen dates/times don’t work for you
3) tell me what dates/times would make the book club possible for you
I’ve never been part of a book club! What will it be like?
Think of this book club as an ongoing, informal conversation on what you’ll read in Unfettered.
If you’ve ever read a book and thought, “I want to tell someone what I think about this chapter,” or “I wonder what other people understood this sentence to mean,” this is a place for that.
Book club dynamics vary depending on the size and enthusiasm levels of the group. Some groups do not need much direction, and can’t wait to start sharing their opinions. Some groups thrive when they have specific questions to start their conversation with. As the moderator, I’ll be prepared for either style, and if you’d rather listen than speak up, that’s fine, too.
What’s the Facebook group for?
The Facebook group is for the book club to maintain connection in between our meetings. It will give everyone a place to continue sharing their thoughts about the chapters we read, as well as posting links to related material. A recap of each week’s conversation will also be posted, in case anyone cannot make a meeting and wants to catch up.
Joining the Facebook group is not required, just highly recommended.
Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
Since this is not a physical product or a class or course, refunds are not available.
Who is this book club for?
Curious Jesus-people interested in open-hearted, honest, and respectful discussion about an expressive + expansive Christianity.
This may not be a book club for those who are of the opinion that:
a) there is only one right way to read the Bible
b) only one denomination/tradition has correct stances on Jesus’ teachings
c) Christians should only read books with which they completely agree
Disrespectful conversation will not be tolerated, but differing opinions will be.
